• Hi,
Thanks for your overwhelming response to the debut issue of Drum
Café Rhythms. Your comments and feedback are greatly appreciated.
At The Drum Café, we are all about building community and
holding dialogue, and the newsletter is a great way to express
your thoughts and ideas with us. So continue to stay
in touch and again, Thank you.
I hope
you have all had a wonderful summer! We have had an extremely
busy one, drumming up and down the West coast, making music and
connecting with people through the power of the drum. But alas,
as it happens every year, the summers run too short and it’s
time to return to the fold of work and school. Talking of school,
The Drum Café has developed a fantastic Educational Program
that is directed towards schools, colleges, faculties and youth
leadership programs.

We had such a fantastic event earlier this year where we drummed
with 1000 children of CASL
(California Association of Student Leaders) in Anaheim.Their
energy and excitement for creating music as a group was insatiable.
They would have drummed for hours if we had let them. The response
to each kid getting a drum and knowing that they each had a
part to play in the sound of the music was exhilarating. I know
for a fact that a lot of the children had never met before,
and after the drumming sessions, they walked out of the session
like life long friends. The drumming broke down the walls that
so often keep us all apart from each other. The children gave
the Drum Café team and myself the greatest gift possible,
the gift of knowing that drumming and communicating through
music, empowers one and helps us to get along.
Here’s
what Jack Ziegler, CASL State Coordinator had to say about the
event – “The Drum Cafe provided
a wonderful and unique experience for our 1,200 delegates to
the 12th Annual CASL (California Association of Student Leaders)
State Conference. Comments from the students and teachers alike
were quite positive and ranged from "most fun I've had
in years" to "I was going to rest during the Drum
Cafe's session but they totally hooked me and had the time of
my life!" In summary, I would recommend this group for
any organization that is looking for a truly new experience.”
If you have any interest in learning more about our educational
program please contact
us and we will be happy to set up a dialogue with you or
your faculty.
As we do with every issue we give you the opportunity to meet
one of our team members. This issue we introduce you to one
of our lead Djembe drummers Frank
Lazzaro. A new addition each month to Drum
Café Rhythms is an article on the BENEFITS
of interactive drumming as a means for TRANSFORMING
and BUILDING teams. Our kick off article
is entitled Drumming
as a powerful way to create unity.
So keep the beat and have a fantastic year. Oh and don’t
forget, the holiday season is fast approaching and using the
Drum Café at your annual end of year employee function
as an incentive for their efforts or merely as entertainment,
is a unique and energetic way to bang out the old year.
Thanks
for continuing the dialogue.

MUSIC
Babatunde Olatunji and Drums of Passion:
The Beat
The album is Olatunji's tribute to the power of rhythm.
As he puts it, "Rhythm is the soul of
life. The whole universe revolves in rhythm.
Everything and every human action revolve in rhythm."
This is also Olatunji's first recording with producer Mickey
Hart, who took some of
his first inspiration from Olatunji's work and released
this album as
part of his series "The World."

Drum Café
California introduces Frank Lazzaro
Frank Lazzaro has been an admitted drum addict for most
of his life. His first exposure to world drumming came through
Mickey Hart and the Grateful Dead. Having attended many
of their concerts, Frank was turned on to such world icons
as Hamza El Din and Baba Olatunji. Later Frank was fortunate
to study with Olatunji at workshops in Big Sur's Esalen
Institute. Frank has since hewn his skills on the djembe
and has performed with many groups including "Drums
of Fire", led by Paulo Mattioli, "Fore-Fote"
with master drummer Lamino Dibo Camara, and his current
group "Damaru". |
|
For Frank drumming and dance have always been inter-related
and inseparable. Frank is married to the lovely Shalimar,
a talented belly dancer. The
two can often be seen performing together passionately
with Damaru and other performance venues. For Frank,
drumming has opened up a whole world of possibilities,
relationships and opportunities to connect with others,
and the universe. "Working as a member of Drum
Cafe continues to reinforce that connectedness we
all share and takes it to another level", says
Frank.
When not playing, Frank is an avid world traveler,
and works as a travel consultant for Tropical Getaways.
His favorite destinations are in the South Pacific:
Tahiti, Fiji, and the Cook Islands. His other interests
include surfing, kayaking, snorkeling and other beach
and water sports. For Frank, it always comes back
to the rhythm and his motto is simple; "Happiness
is Drumming!” |

• Drumming
as a powerful way to create unity!
Interactive Drumming spark’s the imagination and creativity
of both the individual and the group. Joining in one rhythm
and “heartbeat” as a team enables the group
to explore their creativity and leave their comfort zones.
It allows them to break out of their rational and analytical
minds and become more spontaneous and intuitive. Individuals
walk away from a drumming event with a better sense of what
can be achieved when working together as a group –
they open up to free expression and fresh ideas.
At a recent event for Turner Broadcasting and CNN, Senior
Consultant and Organization Developer Alan Brewer had this
comment to make . . . “The learning, for most
people, is that drumming is really no different from any
other communication tool. You listen, you succeed. . . .You
isolate yourself, you lose” |
