Tried and tested for thousands of years, drumming has been a part of almost every culture in the world. It is one of the most universal activities, breaking barriers of age, gender, race, language and ethnicity. Making music together creates a sense of identity and ethnicity. One is carried by the groups rhythm. It creates a sense of trust and safety. The sustained repetition of the beat draws you in, relaxing you and having a mesmerizing effect. You feel your contribution is what is making up the groups music, you are part of an orchestra, a team. This unifying experience sets the tone for the truly powerful analogy between a drumming orchestra and a team.
One must concentrate on the timing, coordinate one's hands, listen to the co-participants, take in the instructions of the facilitator and hopefully "groove" a little with the beat. All these things happen at the same time leaving little space for distraction, and the result, is a sense of focus. One feels the groups energy and one is uplifted. One must flex one's brain, learning new skills on the fly and putting them immediately into practice in a non threatening, non competitive fun environment. There has been a massive amount of research done about the effects of drumming. Some bold claims are made about its healing effect on the mind and body, but certainly there is broad agreement that it is relaxing and de-stressing. As the body becomes comfortable with keeping the time, the mind is released and one can slip into a slightly mesmerized state. The effect of group energy is definite and one can actually carry on drumming in this situation much longer than if one were alone. One feels the effect of the drum circle throughout the day, creating unity and camaraderie. Large groups of people all become intricate parts of one orchestra, leaving each delegate feeling relaxed, focused and energized. With Teambuilding
Events you have to have "teamwork" to make music together.
